Since the days of price controls and windfall profits taxes during the Nixon and Carter presidencies, elected officials have tried to manipulate free markets in order to fulfill their visions of what a “national energy policy” should look like. These efforts have been proven failures. Instead of picking winners and losers in the industry, our leaders should pursue a policy that applies low, simple taxes to all forms of energy production, avoids government subsidies, and eases regulations that stand in the way of developing new resources.

(Alexandria, Va.) – As Congress prepares to return to Washington and debate proposals to punish energy providers for rising prices, the 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU) has launched a Web site dedicated to educating taxpayers on the true targets of these taxes and regulations: America’s truck drivers, businesses, consumers, and families. This and other economic facts about the nation’s energy policy can be found at www.NoNewEnergyTaxes.com.
Despite claims to the contrary, www.NoNewEnergyTaxes.com shows how hiking taxes on oil, gas, or coal companies will only decrease domestic production and increase our dependence on foreign sources, which in turn will drive up utility bills, gas prices, and food costs – at a time when taxpayers can least afford it.
NTU also has launched an aggressive print and radio advertising campaign in select states whose Senators and Representatives hold key votes on energy issues. Archived versions of the ads are available on the new Web site as well. NTU is devoting considerable time to these efforts because – its grassroots team contends – if tax hikes on such politically convenient targets such as “Big Oil” are defeated, Congress may be dissuaded from pushing for tax increases on other activities or products.
The site serves as an information hub, containing analyses from expert economists and charts explaining who actually pays energy taxes and what determines energy prices. Future content will include media updates, commentaries, and communications to Congress.
NTU is a nonpartisan, nonprofit citizen organization founded in 1969 to work for lower taxes, smaller government, and economic freedom at all levels. The group has long been involved in energy issues, from the Nixon-era price controls to the Carter-era Windfall Profits tax to the recent Republican- and Democrat-backed energy legislation. Note: For more information on NTU’s work, visit www.ntu.org.

For Further Information, Contact: Pete Sepp or Natasha Altamirano, (703) 683-5700
(Alexandria, Va.) – At a time when most of the energy proposals coming from Capitol Hill involve increased taxes and regulations on some industries and subsidies for others, President Bush’s support of ending government restrictions on the development of domestic energy supplies is a step in the right direction for the nation’s energy policy. That’s the assessment of the 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU), which today announced its support of the President’s plan.
“While the search for the energy technologies of tomorrow continues, oil and gas will remain a staple for the foreseeable future,” NTU Government Affairs Manager Andrew Moylan said. “Ending the policies that prevent us from exploring domestic energy supplies – both on and offshore – will allow America to produce more oil and help alleviate the fundamental imbalance between supply and demand.”
Much of the factors leading to current energy prices are outside the control of the federal government, Moylan noted. However, the extent to which we allow domestic companies to explore for energy is very much within our control. Ending these costly restrictions would have the benefit of providing a steady stream of oil supply, thereby helping to calm market volatility.
Moylan added that domestic energy exploration is possible without creating major environmental hazards. The nation’s offshore areas where there currently is not a drilling moratorium, such as portions of the Gulf of Mexico, did not experience any oil spills or significant environmental problems after being struck by Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 storm.
“The time has come for Congressional leaders to abandon their costly opposition to expanding American energy supplies,” Moylan concluded. “Rather than recycling the failed, tax-and-spend schemes of the past three decades, Congress should embrace the sound energy policies outlined by the President.”
